Project Challenge
This independent retail space combines a curated vinyl record shop, used bookstore and casual listening area, with a high-ceiling industrial interior of exposed brick and polished concrete floors. The hard reflective surfaces cause noticeable reverberation; customer browsing chatter, turntable playback and in-store performances sound muddy and unfocused. The poor acoustics diminish the vinyl listening experience and disrupt the quiet reading atmosphere. The owner required an acoustic upgrade that preserves the space’s raw vintage industrial aesthetic rather than installing generic flat ceiling panels.
Solution
Cement-bonded spruce wood wool acoustic panels were installed across the full ceiling of the retail and listening areas. The natural fiber-cement texture retains the space’s rugged, authentic vintage industrial character with no additional paint or finish required, aligning perfectly with the independent retail aesthetic. With an NRC of 0.80–0.90, the open fiber structure absorbs scattered ambient noise and improves audio playback clarity. The panels carry Class A fire resistance and excellent dimensional stability, fully complying with commercial retail building codes.
Results
After the upgrade, overall space reverberation was significantly reduced. Vinyl record playback delivers clearer, more defined sound with tighter bass response, and the reading zone maintains a calm, quiet atmosphere. The textured wood wool ceiling has become a signature design feature of the store, enhancing its unique brand identity. Customer dwell time and in-store listening session conversion rates have both increased, supporting the store’s positioning as a premium cultural retail destination.
