Grooved & Perforated MDF Acoustic Panels | University Lecture Hall Acoustic Tuning, Barcelona, Spain

grooved perforated acoustic panel

Project Overview

This acoustic tuning project is for a 420-seat university lecture hall in Barcelona, Spain. The original hard masonry walls and high ceiling caused obvious low-mid frequency standing waves. Lecturers’ speech lost clarity, and microphone feedback frequently occurred. The university needed resonant acoustic panels that balance speech intelligibility and aesthetic performance, suitable for long-term heavy use in campus teaching scenarios.

Solution Configuration

  • Rear wall and side walls are equipped with grooved and perforated resonant acoustic panels. Cavity depth and perforation ratio are calibrated by acoustic simulation to absorb 250Hz–1000Hz standing wave frequencies.
  • Ceiling uses flat, smooth fiberglass acoustic ceiling tiles with no texture, no fleece and no fibrous surface, to control overhead reflected sound and improve sound field uniformity across the whole hall. All materials comply with EN 13501-1 Class B-s1,d0 fire standard. Construction was arranged during summer vacation.

Project Results

Final acoustic inspection shows reverberation time stabilizes at 0.9s–1.2s, which is ideal for lecture use. Speech transmission index (STI) rises to 0.78. Microphone feedback is greatly reduced. The hall can host lectures, seminars and small presentations without temporary acoustic auxiliary equipment.
