Project Challenge
This indoor bouldering and climbing gym features tall concrete walls, hard flooring and high open ceilings, creating severe low-frequency reverberation. Footsteps, hold impacts, coach instructions and crowd chatter echo continuously throughout the space, making communication difficult and increasing auditory fatigue for climbers and staff. Standard porous acoustic panels cannot withstand the impact-heavy environment or resolve the gym’s dominant low-frequency standing waves.

Solution
Combined grooved and perforated resonant acoustic panels were mounted on the upper perimeter walls of the gym. Engineered on the Helmholtz resonance principle, the precision slot-and-hole structure specifically targets the 250Hz–1000Hz mid-low frequency noise that dominates large sports spaces. Paired with rear air cavities and acoustic fill, the system achieves an overall NRC of 0.90 for balanced full-band sound absorption. The durable wood-veneer surface resists impact and wear from active gym use.

Results
Post-renovation testing confirmed a major reduction in overall reverberation and ambient noise. Coaches can give clear instructions across the climbing floor, and climbers experience far less auditory fatigue during long sessions. The robust panel construction holds up to the high-impact recreational environment. The upgrade greatly improved both safety communication and overall comfort for gym members and staff.
