Project Challenge

This high-volume craft brewpub features an exposed-brick industrial interior with high vaulted ceilings, concrete floors and an open kitchen layout. During peak dining hours, customer conversation, glassware clinking, background music and kitchen equipment noise overlapped heavily, creating a loud, fatiguing acoustic environment. Patrons had to raise their voices to converse, which shortened average dwell time and reduced per-guest spending. The operator required an acoustic solution that preserved the raw industrial brand aesthetic while meeting commercial building fire and safety codes.

Solution

Cement-bonded spruce wood wool acoustic panels were installed across the full ceiling grid of the dining hall and bar area. The natural fiber-cement texture retains the venue’s rugged, authentic industrial character with no additional paint or finish required, aligning perfectly with the brand’s interior design direction. With an NRC of 0.80–0.90, the open fiber structure absorbs scattered crowd noise and reduces overall reverberation in the high-ceiling space. The panels carry Class A fire resistance per ASTM standards and excellent moisture and grease resistance, making them suitable for long-term use in restaurant environments with open kitchens.

Results

After the upgrade, peak-hour ambient sound levels dropped by an average of 6–8 dB. Guests can hold conversations at normal volume without straining, and average customer dwell time increased by 29%. The textured wood wool ceiling has become a signature design feature of the venue, reinforcing its authentic craft brand identity. The project successfully balances acoustic comfort, interior aesthetics and regulatory compliance for a high-traffic food and beverage venue.
