Medical Grade Fabric Acoustic Panels | Senior Long-Term Care Centre, Toronto, Canada

nursing home acoustics

Project Overview

This acoustic upgrade project covers resident rooms, nursing stations, public activity halls and corridors of a premium long-term senior care centre in Toronto, Canada, with a total area of 3,900 ㎡. Original lightweight partition walls and hard wall finishes caused obvious inter-room sound leakage. Equipment noise and corridor conversation disturbed resident rest, and speech clarity was poor for elderly residents with hearing loss. Care conversation privacy also failed to meet healthcare compliance requirements. The centre required wipeable, hygienic acoustic materials meeting Canadian healthcare standards.

Solution Configuration

  • Resident rooms & nursing stations: Full-height high-density fiberglass core medical-grade fabric acoustic panels are installed, with an NRC rating of 0.85–1.0. The outer layer uses medical-grade stain-resistant flame-retardant fabric, supporting daily wipe-down disinfection, effectively reducing airborne sound transmission between rooms and protecting care conversation privacy.
  • Activity halls & corridors: Perforated acoustic panels with mineral wool backing (NRC ≥0.80) are applied to control reverberation in public zones, with smooth dense easy-to-clean surfaces, adapting to high-footfall senior care scenarios.

All materials meet ASTM E84 Class A fire safety standards and Health Canada low VOC emission requirements. Construction was carried out by floor in phases, with a total construction period of 34 days, with partial normal operation maintained throughout.

Project Results

Post-completion testing shows inter-room sound leakage is reduced by 42%, and resident room nighttime ambient noise meets senior care comfort standards. Speech clarity for elderly residents improves significantly, and care conversation privacy fully meets local healthcare compliance requirements. Resident satisfaction scores for quiet comfort increase by 35%, and the project passes provincial healthcare facility acceptance.
