Project Challenge
Large full-service grocery supermarkets face complex, continuous noise from customer traffic, shopping cart wheels, checkout beeps, refrigeration systems and overhead announcements. The original mineral fiber ceiling offered minimal sound absorption, resulting in a loud, echoing shopping environment that fatigues both customers and staff. Retail operators also require ceiling materials with Class A fire resistance, moisture resistance and long-term dimensional stability for high-humidity produce and freezer sections.
Solution
The entire sales floor ceiling was replaced with high-density inorganic fiberglass acoustic ceiling tiles. The material delivers inherent Class A fire resistance with zero flame spread and low smoke emission, meeting strict commercial retail building codes. With an NRC of 0.90–0.95, the interconnected porous structure absorbs mixed crowd noise, mechanical equipment hum and broadcast echo. The tiles also resist sagging, mold and moisture damage, performing reliably near refrigerated and fresh-food sections.
Results
Peak-hour ambient noise across the sales floor decreased significantly. Public address announcements come through clear and intelligible without echo distortion. Customers report a more comfortable, less stressful shopping experience, and staff fatigue from all-day noise exposure is reduced. The durable, low-maintenance ceiling system lowers long-term facility upkeep costs for the retail operator.
