Project Challenge
This full-service grocery supermarket deals with complex, continuous noise from customer traffic, shopping cart wheels, checkout systems, refrigeration units and overhead announcements. The original mineral fiber ceiling provided weak sound absorption, resulting in a loud, echoing shopping environment that fatigues both customers and staff. The retail operator also required ceiling materials with Class A fire resistance, moisture resistance and long-term dimensional stability for produce and freezer sections.
Solution
The entire sales floor ceiling was replaced with high-density inorganic fiberglass acoustic ceiling tiles. The material features inherent Class A fire resistance with zero flame spread and low smoke emission, fully meeting strict commercial retail building codes. With an NRC of 0.90–0.95, the interconnected porous structure absorbs mixed crowd noise, mechanical hum and broadcast echo. The tiles resist sagging, mold and moisture damage, performing reliably near refrigerated and fresh-food zones.
Results
Peak-hour ambient noise across the sales floor decreased significantly. Public address announcements are now clear and intelligible throughout the venue without echo distortion. Customers report a more relaxed, less stressful shopping experience, and staff fatigue from all-day noise exposure is reduced. The durable, low-maintenance ceiling system also lowers long-term facility upkeep costs for the retail operator.
