Project Context
This campus multi-function auditorium hosts daily school assemblies, lectures, student theatrical performances and small concerts. The original masonry structure with high ceilings caused severe mid-low frequency standing waves and uneven sound field distribution. Speech intelligibility was poor during lectures, and music performances lacked layering with muddy low-frequency response. The school required a professional acoustic tuning solution suitable for both speech and performance scenarios, complying with North American educational building fire safety codes and delivering long-term durable performance suitable for high-frequency student use.
Custom Acoustic Solution
The project adopts a three-layer professional acoustic system: grooved acoustic panels + perforated resonant panels + fiberglass acoustic ceiling.
Side walls and rear walls are fitted with a grooved and perforated resonant acoustic system, paired with mineral wool infill and rear air cavities. Acoustic simulation was carried out based on the hall’s volume to precisely tune the slot and perforation ratios, targeting 250–1000Hz mid-low frequency standing waves. The overall system achieves an NRC rating of 0.90 with balanced full-band sound absorption.
The ceiling area uses high-density fiberglass acoustic ceiling tiles, NRC 0.93, to control overhead reflected sound and optimize overall sound field uniformity.
All materials meet ASTM E84 Class A fire safety standards, with impact-resistant surface treatment suitable for campus public venues. The 760 ㎡ project was completed during school vacation within a 22-day construction window.
Project Outcome
Final acoustic testing confirmed reverberation time falls within the dual-use optimal range for speech and live music. Speech intelligibility improved by over 45%, and musical performances present clear layering with well-controlled low-frequency resonance. The auditorium can now flexibly host assemblies, lectures, theatrical performances and concerts without temporary acoustic supplementation. The project passed educational building acoustic acceptance with excellent results.
