Project Challenge
This high-end full-service grocery market features fresh produce, artisanal deli, bakery, seafood counters and full aisles of packaged goods. The large sales floor suffers from complex, continuous noise from customer traffic, shopping carts, refrigeration systems, checkout stations and overhead announcements. The original mineral fiber ceiling offered weak sound absorption, resulting in a loud, echoing shopping environment that fatigued both customers and staff. High humidity in produce and seafood sections also caused traditional ceiling materials to sag and degrade over time. The retailer required a durable, code-compliant acoustic ceiling upgrade aligned with its premium brand positioning.
Solution
The entire sales floor ceiling was replaced with high-density inorganic fiberglass acoustic ceiling tiles. The material provides inherent Class A fire resistance with zero flame spread and low smoke emission, fully complying with North American commercial retail building codes. With an NRC of 0.90–0.95, the interconnected porous structure effectively absorbs the complex mixed noise typical of large grocery environments. The tiles also offer exceptional sag resistance, mold resistance and moisture stability, maintaining consistent performance in high-humidity fresh food zones with minimal long-term maintenance.
Results
Post-renovation measurements showed a significant drop in peak-hour ambient noise across the sales floor. Public address announcements are clear and intelligible throughout the store, and customers report a more relaxed, premium shopping experience. The durable ceiling system reduces long-term facility maintenance costs, particularly in humid produce and seafood departments. The acoustic upgrade supports the market’s premium positioning while improving operational efficiency and customer satisfaction.
